A squat, burly looking guy with dark, short hair stepped out. From the passenger side, a slim woman with fine, light brown hair just past her shoulders walked around the front of the car to join him. She was wearing a smart white blouse and black skirt, with flat black shoes and carrying a large holdall-type bag. They both headed down the path to the house.

I looked at the woman, and a sharp intake of breath unconsciously caught me off guard as an image of her sitting, waiting in a reception area, flashed in front of my mind. My skin prickled, and my adrenalin started to surge. I knew that reception. It was the one I had sat in at VialCorp.

My breathing became erratic as my protective senses got ready to respond. What did she want? What if she knew about me? What if my picture was displayed in the office, and everyone there was on the lookout for me? My mind raced and mixed up rational with irrational possibilities. I looked down at my right hand, which had started to tingle and gasped to see it glowing with a white light that was jumping and crackling. I dashed to the small downstairs toilet, locking the door.

It’s okay, I said, talking to myself in my head and taking some big, slow, deep breaths. I used the techniques Thea had taught me to calm my emotions, thinking of her words.

It had been a day on Alchemia set aside for me to explore my powers. Thea had told me it would be tough. We had walked to an open area of ground with large rocks lying sporadically among the long blades of meadow grass, they swayed and rippled in waves in the constantly shifting breeze. She sat me down on a rock and told me that Rowan would be in danger in the future. She had seen it. My panic attack had been induced. They were something that had started after I thought Thea had died in the fire. My breathing was heavy, erratic, and I felt lightheaded and sick. I felt like I was trapped and needed to escape. Bolts of energy had shot from my hands, exploding a nearby rock that had happened to be in the way. The fragments were instantly swallowed up in the long grass. Thea had come to stand behind me and had wrapped her hands around my waist, pressing her hands flat against the base of my ribcage. I thought of her voice.

“Breathe, Haesel, with me, deeply, contain it.” Her hands glowed a warm amber and quelled the ball of acid that was growing like a cancer in my centre. “Repeat in your head. I am okay. If I am calm, I can protect her. I need to be calm to see it.” I did as she said, and slowly my panic eased. She had turned to me explaining, “Your panic induces fear and leaves you open. It makes your powers erratic and less controlled.”
